Heroes and The Cult of Celebrity

When it comes to heroism and the cult of celebrity, reality television puts a new spin on how people fall in love with certain characters. The concept behind reality television is to provide stories of life experiences that are more realistic to viewers. It is to help bring a deeper connection that satisfies the appetite of the American people. The appetite of the American people can be easily identified as being this attraction to people that exhibit qualities greater than one self. The reality TV show “the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” provides such attraction to certain viewers.                                                                                              The women on the show have gained their celebrity status by their extravagant lifestyle. They each have their own distinct personalities and display certain morals and values that are attractive to viewers. Millions of viewers follow their every move and watch each episode religiously. The cult of celebrity can have its benefits but it can also be detrimental to society. The women on the show hold a certain degree of influence on people. They can easily influence people’s spending habits by displaying certain items on the show or talking about their favorite designer. They can also influence people’s health, social awareness, attitudes towards personal failure, relationships and above all they view their self (Lawerence, 2009).  People idolize these women because their lifestyle is unlike their own. They are people set a part from the rest of society because of their fame and fortune yet they experience the same elements of life which creates a certain connection.                                                                                                                As mentioned earlier, each woman has their own distinct personality which helps appeal to a variety of people. When drama is created amongst the group it is easy to favor any one particular person just because of the way they handled the situation. The viewers are in a sense are looking for behavior that satisfies their belief on what is right or what is wrong. This type of behavior is the exact concept of heroes and the cult of celebrity.
